So we got a Dr. Strange trailer yesterday….no wait, that was the teaser trailer not the actual first trailer. And a few days earlier we got the third (Or is fourth? I don’t even know anymore) trailer for Civil War and the third or fourth trailer for Suicide Squad. And that’s after the first trailer for Star Wars: Rogue One that we got a few days before. And a few trailers for X-Men: Apocalypse. This isn’t the end of this, either. We undoubtedly have more trailers coming for the Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films that are coming this summer. And then…….who the hell knows?
Am I the only one getting tired of this?
Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing snippets of movies to come, even if it’s almost a year away from the film’s theatrical release. But it’s really getting to be too much now. And that’s not even counting the comic con presentations, late night talk show trailer debuts, schedule announcements, etc. Back in my day (yeah I’m 41 years old) you would get a trailer a few months before the movie dropped. And you had to go to the theater for another movie to see that. And you got commercials for the movie maybe a month or so out from the release date. There were films you didn’t even find out about until you saw that first trailer in the theater.
Now you get announcements of when the teaser trailer is coming, the teaser trailer, announcements of the main trailer, main trailer debuts, and multiple follow up trailers. The process starts up even for movies that aren’t due in the theater for another year, maybe longer. There’s a big spectacle made out of the announcement of the film along with notifications of the day shooting started, the day principal photography ended, when reshoots happen. And of course, still photos from the movie sets. We get director announcements, every major casting announcement, and sequel announcements if the film does well enough. If there’s a way to make all these movies mash together and indistinguishable from another, this might be it. I love all these movies just like you guys do but I could really do without the information overload….
Now excuse me while I check out the Rogue One trailer again…
